Buying a Cordless Impact Wrench?

By Admin

If you are thinking of buying a cordless impact wrench then you are probably doing some research before the purchase as some impact wrenches can be expensive. You want to know are they worth it?

My aim in this article is to give you a few pointers in getting the best quality power tool you can when you make that purchase. Today manufacturers are offering a bewildering array of features for new cordless impact wrenches, but are these features really necessary?

Purchase Considerations

If you are buying cordless, then it is likely that mobility is a bigger factor in your purchase decision than raw power is.  Corded tools are still more powerful whether they are powered by electric motor, hydraulic energy or compressed air.  The biggest overall determinant of power for a cordless power tool generally is voltage rating.  This rule is true for any electric impact wrench currently available. An 18 volt tool will generate more torque than a 12 volt for example, but power should not be your sole determining factor.  Read manufacturers torque output ratings with skepticism. An honest user review of the particular model in use can provide better information in many cases. Compare that review with other reviews of different models by the same user.

An issue that relates closely to power is that of controllability.  When you apply a fixing using a cordless impact wrench you will also often need to remove it the same way.  If the model has no torque control then every fixing you apply will be as tight as can be and this can be a bad thing if the time comes that they have to be undone.  It is far better to have a wrench that will apply a measured amount of torque to the nut and so avoid any danger of stripping the threads.  If your chosen tool cannot moderate its power then there are adapters available that can do this for you, but they are an additional expense and this should be factored in when making a purchase.

If access to the work piece is an issue, like in some automotive applications for example, then an angle head impact wrench can be great.  They can normally be used at a variety of angles and not just the usual 90 degrees, but check the models specification.  Most angle head cordless impact wrenches have narrow heads that are designed for constricted access environments and this is why their power output is often lower than a more conventionally designed impact wrench.

If you are on a budget then buying a second hand or factory reconditioned unit can offer a great saving, but be careful.  Make sure the power tool you choose comes with a reasonable length warranty and read the conditions.  Some stores sell second hand tools that are great value and have been thoroughly reconditioned with quality parts, others do not.  If you are in doubt then ask around and see if anyone you know has bought from them and were happy with what they received.  Going to a physical store, rather than buying off the internet is key here.  An internet bought product with a manufacturers guarantee is fine, but the same product second hand can be a nightmare if you have to pay to return it and then wait for it to come back again.  Postal charges alone can exceed the purchase price of the tool if it has to be returned more than once.

Some manufacturers offer various proprietary technologies in order to make their product better than a competitor.  It is impossible to details them all but generally a few things hold true.  Moving surfaces in contact wear out – anything that reduces heat or friction in the impact wrench is a good thing.  Also, consider a model with brushless motor technology. Similarly harder wearing parts are better than those that aren’t – if a manufacturer advertises better quality steel in a hammer and anvil assembly for instance, then it is most likely true as advertising standards agencies in most countries will not allow false claims.  Air cooling systems are only minimally important as in fact almost all cordless impact wrenches are air cooled.  Unless you are aiming to use the tool on almost continuous cycle this “feature” will play little role in determining the life of the power tool.

The two most important areas in cordless impact wrenches are the hammer/anvil/drive shaft and the motor.  Batteries also play a role, but can be replaced easily and with little downtime.  It is natural for heavily used batteries to wear out over time.  Casings need to be reasonably durable and not obviously flimsy, but here the real factor is how much care you take with your purchase.  No quality cordless impact wrench will stand up to being mistreated.

Hitachi Cordless Impact Wrench

Hitachi Cordless Impact Wrench 18V 1/2” Drive WR18DL

Not all cordless impact wrenches are created equal and in this review of the WR18DL Hitachi cordless impact wrench we are reviewing a brute!  That is not to say that it is heavy or unwieldy, far from it.  Although the tool is an 18v powerhouse it was designed to operate and feel like a 12v tool in the hand.  For the most part Hitachi have successfully achieved their goals.

This Hitachi power tool claims a class leading whopping 1950in.lbs of torque and this really is great performance from an 18v power tool.  Yet for all its power this tool is not large or unwieldy.  The design aim was to make a lightweight tool that would not be tiring to operate and there is no doubt that Hitachi has been successful in this aim.  The Hitachi WR18DL is a mere 6-5/8” long and weighs in at 3.5lbs.  This cordless power tool is smaller and lighter than many similar tools in the 12v range offered by other manufacturers.

For those of us that are more technically minded, the Hitachi WR18DL impact wrench sports a no load speed rating of 0-2,600RPM and an impact rate of 3,200IPM.  Power is delivered in two modes, the first is called appropriately enough “Power Mode” (0-2600RPM).  Under this setting the tool produces maximum torque and rotation speed.  Some jobs may require more control and a slower speed or less torque.  For those kinds of jobs Hitachi also included a setting called “Save Mode” (0-2,000RPM).  While operating under this setting the tool reduces its power output and rotation speed to make this monster behave like a kitten.

Hitachi Cordless Impact Wrench WR18DLHitatchi are justly proud of their achievements surrounding this tool.  The motor is protected from overheating during heavy cycle use by their “Cool Flow” system.  This is designed to provide a constant flow of air over the motor to enable it to work harder, longer and reduce the risk of burnout.  The brushes and armature of the motor are externally accessible, which is a great aid when maintenance is due.   The unit also has an LED lamp to light the work place area – which has become almost an industry standard addition.

The Hitachi Cordless Impact Wrench WR18DL carries a ten year warranty on the tool, a two year warranty on the batteries and a one year warranty on the charger supplied with the kit.  Overall this is a pretty comprehensive level of free coverage and justly reflects the confidence that the manufacturer has in their product.

Makita Cordless Impact Wrench (Pt2)

In the earlier article we discussed the capabilities of two angle head power tools in the Makita cordless impact wrench range, both of these impact wrenches employ a 3/8” drive.  Of course not all workmen or workplaces use 3/8” drive and perhaps 1/2” is more common.  Also purely because of their near narrow angle head design these tool produce quite low levels of torque when compared to power tools not designed under these constraints.   This article expands upon the details of the Makita’s range by exploring some of the conventional design 1/2” drive range which offer more power still, in what is a well known and widely used fitting.

Makita 18V Cordless Impact Wrench 1/2″ Drive BTW251

Makita BTW251 18V Corldess Impact Wrench KitThis Makita power tool is a conventionally designed, gun-style unit.  It is compact and light weight at 6-1/2” long and only 3.7lbs with a battery installed.  It fits comfortably in a medium sized hand and so would be suitable both for women as well as men.  The handle has a soft rubberised coating that is easy on an ungloved hand.

The Makita BTW251 cordless impact wrench produces 170ft.lbs of torque in a small and compact unit.  In use it generates 0-2100RPM (no load speed) and 0-3200IPM and employs a variable speed trigger.

In common with many of the cordless impact wrenches in the Makita range this tool also has an LED light to illuminate the work area.  It also come with the usual Makita 3 year guarantee on the tool and 1 year guarantee on the 18v LXT batteries supplied with the kit.

Makita 18V Cordless Impact Wrench 1/2″ Drive BTW450

Makita BTW450Z Impact Wrench (Bare Tool)If the torque of the previous unit was not enough then there is always this monster from Makita.  The BTW450 cordless impact wrench tool is a conventionally designed gun type impactor.  It is 10-1/2” long and weighs in at 7.5lbs.  While this is substantially larger than the previous power tool, it is still remarkably small and light when consideration is given to the quality and output of the motor, hammer and anvil assembly are taken into consideration.

The Makita BTW450 18v cordless impact wrench produces 325ft.lbs of maximum torque.  In use it produces a (no load speed) rating of 1600RPM and 2,200IPM.  The unit features a large rocker switch, rather than a variable speed trigger used in other units.  This switch is easily accessible while using the tool with gloved hands.

Like other cordless impact wrenches in the Makita impact gun range this power tool has a built in LED to assist in illuminating the work area and a soft feel, rubberised handle.  The tool also has extra shock absorbent protection for the battery which can be necessary is cordless power wrenches like these that generate significant vibration and torque.

Both of these tool kits come with two batteries, charger, tool bag and workbelt clip as well as Makita’s usual three year guarantee on the tool and twelve month guarantee on the 18v LXT Lithium-Ion batteries provided.

Makita Cordless Impact Wrench

Makita power tools are well known already for being high quality, durable products and the Makita cordless impact wrench range are no different.  At the time of writing this article Makita produce an array of eight cordless impact wrenches ranging from a 9.6V Cordless Angle Driver right up to an 18V high torque, LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 1/2” Impact Wrench.

Whatever your need for light industrial use there is a Makita cordless impact wrench for you.

Makita 9.6V Cordless Angle Socket Driver 6706DWA

Makita Cordless Impact WrenchThis long bodied (15 and a half inches) cordless impact driver manages to get into spaces where no other tool would reach.  The tool has a narrow head at 1-11/32” which help it gain access to tight spaces that other power tools would not.

This socket driver has five torque settings rated at: 17.4, 30.4, 41.6, 52.0 and 69.4 in.lbs of torque supplied by a 3/8” drive.  Combined with the Makita Auto Battery Shutoff (ABS) system this tool delivers predictable, reliable levels of torque every time.  The ABS system shuts the battery off at a 20% charge level to ensure consistent power.

Additional Information

The tool has a rubber coated tool head to stop scratches on the work piece and an electronic clutch to prevent application of excessive force and thread stripping.  With a battery installed the unit weighs around 3.3lbs

One of the criticisms often thrown at cordless power tools generally is that they lack power.  For that reason the next power tool we will look at here is a top of the range 18V Makita cordless impact wrench.

Makita Cordless Angle Impact Wrench 3/8” Drive 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Model: BTL063

The previous tool is very good for light applications that require minimal torque but if a case is to be made for the power of cordless impact wrenches then an 18 volt tool is going to be required.  Thankfully this Makita power tool fits that job admirably.

The Makita BTL063 delivers a whopping 44ft.lbs of torque (530in.lbs) while being only slightly heavier than the 6706DWA.  The BTL063 weighs in at 3.7lbs with battery installed and has an overall length of 15-1/4” and so is therefore actually a little shorter despite the increased power output.

This model is also a 3/8” drive, but has a number of other extra features.  The tool has a LED to illuminate the work area, which can be really useful in tight, cramped conditions with little natural light available.  This model has a Makita motor capable of delivering 0-2,000RPM and 0-3,000IPM and has a variable speed trigger if fine control is required.  The grip is soft to the touch and comfortable in the hand.

This Makita 18V cordless impact wrench is perfect for many light industrial or automotive applications where more power is required.

Cordless Impact Wrench

What is a Cordless Impact Wrench?

Before we can understand what a cordless impact wrench is, or the benefits it can bring to the workplace, we must understand what a conventional impact wrench is and the types of jobs it is usually used for.

An impact wrench is type of power tool designed to supply high torque energy to a socket or other fitting.  The energy transferred is designed to occur with minimal exertion by the operator.  Impact wrenches work by storing energy in some form of rotating mass inside the tool housing and transferring this energy in a rapid manner to the work piece via an output shaft.

Impact wrenches are sometimes also known as an air wrench, air gun, torque gun, rattle gun, pulse tool or impactor.

How They Work

In use, the impact wrench stores energy in a rotating mass called a hammer.  The power to rotate this hammer is supplied by a motor and the energy contained in the hammer is then transferred to the output shaft which is known as the anvil.  The power transfer is very rapid and occurs over a very brief time frame, this means that only minimal torque is experienced by the operator.

Industrial Uses

Impact wrenches are widely employed in a large number of industries.  Examples include the automotive industry, aerospace, heavy equipment maintenance, major construction projects and product assembly – although here they are commonly known as “pulse tools”

Types of Impact Wrench

Compressed air is the most usual power source for impact wrenches, but this type of tool is not cordless and lacks versatility and mobility.  Compressed air tools also require lubrication which is supplied either by “oiled air” supplied direct by the compressor, or from an oil reservoir stored on the tool itself.

It is also possible to power impact wrenches with hydraulic power, but this is generally more expensive.

Cordless Impact Wrenches

Due to recent advances in battery and motor technology it has become possible to power impact wrenches with electric motors.  Modern, battery operated, cordless impact wrenches are becoming an increasingly common sight in the workplace.  Cordless impact wrenches give all the advantages of mobility without the necessity of a trailing cord or other limitation imposed by a corded tool.  They are ideal for light industrial applications, although many models lack the power to be of use in heavy industrial workplaces.

In situations where a very high toque force is required hydraulically powered impact wrenches are still king, but the day is coming when they will be replaced by the more mobile cordless impact wrench.
